The Waters Lab has officially started!

September 1st, 2024 – Prof. Waters officially started as an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Denver. The first graduate student also started in the Waters Lab, Sam Smiley.

Novel correlated and topological phases in rhombohedral graphite aligned to BN

August 31st, 2024 – Our work on rhombohedral graphite aligned to boron nitride has been posted on the arXiv. Our work was also one of the papers featured in a Condensed Matter Journal Club post on “The new quantum anomalous Hall effects require new concepts”

Papers posted on correlated and topological properties of twisted graphene multilayers

July 1st, 2024 – Two preprints are now available on our latest work! The first establishes a new material platform family with highly correlated and topological phases: twisted graphene multilayers. The second dives into the details of the most exciting member of this family, twisted bilayer on trilayer graphene, which has a remarkably pristine and tunable topological phase!

Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics – Physics Slam!

January 21, 2023 – Dacen was a presenter at the University of Washington Physics Slam, part of the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWIP). In his 10 minute talk, he described the 2D material revolution, where stacking and twisting of 2D materials can achieve exciting phases of matter in a highly controllable platform. The talk can be seen here.

Awarded ORISE Fellowship

September 29, 2022 – Dacen was selected for an appointment to the Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program, administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) through the IC and U.S. Department of Energy. The 2-3 year fellowship was awarded for his proposal titled Electronic correlations and topology engineering in van der Waals moiré systems for novel quantum information devices.
